What to include in a BIM coordination support brief
A practical BIM briefing checklist covering model responsibilities, versions, coordinates, exchanges and issue closure.
Define the outcome
Specify whether the support is for discipline modelling, drawing production, model federation or coordination issue management. These are different responsibilities. State the intended use of each model and the information required at the next project milestone.
Make the project setup explicit
Provide the BIM execution plan where one exists, the project coordinate system, model naming conventions and the agreed software versions. Identify source models and their current issue status. Confirm which formats must be returned and how information moves through the common data environment.
Assign model and issue ownership
Name the owner of each discipline model and the person who can accept changes. For coordination support, define who identifies issues, assigns actions, reviews responses and closes them. A clash list is useful only when someone is responsible for deciding which issues matter and resolving them.
Agree review and exchange dates
Set model exchange dates around the programme and allow time for coordination before drawing issue. Specify the required information level for each stage; more detail is not automatically better. Record any exclusions so downstream users do not treat an unfinished model as approved construction information.
Use a small alignment exercise
A sample model area or drawing sheet helps confirm standards before production increases. Review naming, geometry, schedules and output presentation together. Maintain a query log and a revision record as the package develops. If information requirements change, agree the effect on programme and fee rather than absorbing scope changes invisibly.
