Outsourcing technical drawings without losing control

How to brief and review outsourced CAD, Revit and fabrication drawing packages while retaining clear approval responsibilities.

Issue a usable drawing brief

Provide the source information, drawing register, templates and an example of an acceptable finished sheet. Specify units, layers, title blocks, revision conventions and file formats. Explain who will use the drawings and the purpose of the next issue.

Distinguish drafting from design

A drafter should not have to infer an engineering decision from an incomplete mark-up. Identify which decisions have been approved and which require a technical query. If design development is part of the commission, state the responsible designer and checking arrangements explicitly.

Control the source information

Use one agreed location for current inputs. Identify superseded files and tell the team when new instructions replace earlier information. Avoid issuing contradictory mark-ups through several email threads. A revision register gives everyone a common reference for what has changed.

Review before the package gets large

Agree an early sample sheet and review it for presentation, technical consistency and usability. Resolve recurring comments once and carry the decision into the production standard. Reserve time for final checking, comment closure and authorisation before issue.

Plan the handover

Confirm that native files, referenced files and agreed exports will be supplied in an organised structure. For as-built records, identify the verified site information used and any limitations. For workshop or erection drawings, agree the release-for-use route with the relevant project parties. White-label presentation should never obscure who is responsible for approval.
